MAG – PS3 Game Review

Mag Video Game Review

MAG is a large-scale First-Person Shooter for the PS3. It has some very unique features such as very large-scale matches and very intense shootouts. It combines classic shooter elements with objective-based wars.

Part 1: The Story

The story behind MAG is set in the year 2025. Every country in the world has agreed to the Millennium Peace Accord. It restricts countries military size and troop deployment. Because of this Private Military Companies (PMCs) are the new way of getting stuff done, for money of course. There are many PMCs but only the “Big Three” are featured in MAG. Those PMCs are Seryi Volk Executive Response (S.V.E.R.), Raven Industries and Valor Company. Because those PMCs are so big they are impacting each-others income. So the Shadow War emerged with the PMCs attacking each-other without anyone on the outside knowing.

I believe this story is well thought out and it fits the game. It’s find it quite interesting.

Part 2: Characters

MAG has some great character models for online play. Since that’s the only form of play in MAG they put a lot of work into them. They can be completely customized from the armor they wear to what weapons they use to what colour their armour is. More customization parts are unlocked at higher levels and look really good.

The character models are great and well made. I really like them.

10/10

Part 3: Maps

MAG doesn’t have a wide variety of maps but that doesn’t matter since the maps are HUGE! They range from 64 player maps for Sabotage and Suppression to the HUGE 256 player maps for Domination There are 5 maps per PMC. 2 of which can only be played if you are that respective PMC. There’s 1 map per PMC per game type resulting in 3 maps per game type. The two maps that can only be played as that respective PMC are for the Suppression game type and the Training Missions.

The maps in MAG are awesome! They are huge and even though there are only around 10 maps you rarely play in the same part of a map twice, but i still think it could have used some more.

Part 4: The Game Types.

MAG has 4 different game types. Those are Suppression, Sabotage, Acquisition and Domination.

The Suppression game type is simple. You have to deplete your opponents score bar by killing the opposing team members. It’s played within a PMC as a training exercise with 32 players per team. It’s the simplest game type but also probably the worst for XP.

The Sabotage game type is also pretty simple. One team is attacking and the other is defending. Both teams have 32 players adding up to 1 platoon each. The attacking team will try to capture satellite up-links A and B and then destroy data centre C. The defending team will obviously have to defend them. The game starts off with only A and B available. If the attacking team captures both A and B and holds them both simultaneously then C will appear. The attacking team will then try to place explosive charges on C and defend it while they activate. If C is destroyed then the attacking team wins and the game ends.

The Acquisition game type is more complicated. One team attacks a large military compound with 2 platoons and the other team defends also with 2 platoons. The attacking team has 3 main objectives. The first objective is to take out the main gate of the compound and any roadblocks in the way. The second objective is to take out the Anti-Air battery with explosive charges and the third objective is to secure a prototype transport vehicle, drive it out of the compound and drive it into a shipping container where it will be airlifted out. If the attacking team captures two vehicles total then they win the battle. This game requires good teamwork because the defending team could repair the main gate or roadblocks as you’re escaping with the transport, making it impossible for you to escape. It also features Sensor Arrays, Mortar batteries, Bunkers and Motor Pools.

The Domination game type is the hardest game type to play. It has two teams each with 128 players. Each team is divided into 4 platoons with one Officer in Charge (OIC) per team. It is about attacking enemy oil reserves. There are 3 main objectives in Domination if you’re attacking. The first is to secure 2 Burnoff Towers per platoon. Then you have to secure 2 Cooling Towers per platoon. The next and final stage is to take control of a Vent Station and a Pump Station. For every Pump or Vent station your entire team controls you will deal damage to the oil control system. Once enough damage is dealt the system will breakdown and the attack will be successful. Each of these objectives has to be done for each platoon.

I think the game types are great and are very interesting and fun to play. But i just wish there were maybe 1 or 2 more.

9/10

Part 5: The Leadership

In MAG each team is divided up into multiple squads of 8 people. Each game type will have at least 4 squads which makes up an entire platoon. If there are 4 platoons however, the team will have an OIC.

Each Squad or Platoon will have a leader. Each type of leader gets their own respective leadership abilities. Squad leaders can “Frago” targets that they want their team to attack or defend. When a player does anything near a “frago’d” target they will gain a double xp frago bonus. Squad leaders can also call in Mortar Barrages or Airstrikes on positions on the map.

Platoon leaders are even more powerful than Squad leaders. They can do more than a squad leader, such as call in a sensor sweep or a UAV.

In Domination the most powerful leader appears. This is the OIC or Officer in Charge. They can call in command abilities that are mainly about helping their entire team. Those abilities are:

Satellite Sweep: Every enemy on the map will appear on your team’s maps. This happens for everyone on your team.

Comms Jamming: Enemy communications will be jammed. voice chat will be intermittent. The enemy team will not be able to switch radio channels. Static will be heard in their headsets.

Signals Jamming: Enemy signals will be jammed. This stops the enemy from using airstrikes or mortar barrages. Enemy squad leaders will not be able to change frago’d targets.

Rapid Redeploy: This can only be used while defending. Your team’s respawn counter will be reduced to 9 seconds from 19. If used at the same time as an enemy blockade respawn times will remain the same.

Blockade: This can only be used while attacking. It increases your opponents respawn counter to 29 seconds from 19. If used at the same time as rapid redeploy then respawn times will remain the same.

Tactical Strike Refresh: This is the most important command ability. This refreshes all of your teams tactical strike cooldown times. All Squad or Platoon leaders will be able to use tactical strikes immediately after the refresh.

In my opinion the leadership system in MAG is great. In encourages people to work as a team in order to accomplish tasks.

10/10

Part 6: Vehicles

In MAG there are only a few vehicles. The Jeep, the APC and the Helicopter. The Jeep and the APC both have roof mounted turrets. The only difference is that the APC can take more damage and acts as a mobile spawn point. The Helicopter is only in Domination and acts as a spawn point. It hovers over a single point on the map and can be entered and exited at any time. It has mounted machine guns and is very powerful. However if the opponent repair their AA battery or shoots it down it will kill everyone inside it.

The vehicles are quite good but there isn’t much variety. I think they should have made a tank or a flyable helicopter.

6/10

Final Score: 8.5/10
